Hispaniolan Endemics

– Dominican Republic –

Day 1 – We meet you upon your arrival at Las Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo. From there, we drive straight to Sabana de la Mar, on the northern shore of the island of Hispaniola. We’ll arrive in time for dinner and then get a good night’s sleep to be ready for birding in the morning!

Day 2 – Today, we will hike the land-based part of the park in search of Ridgway’s Hawk and other terrestrial bird species such as White-crowned Pigeon, Plain Pigeon, Hispaniolan Parrot, White-necked Crow, Broad-billed Tody, Greater Antillean Pewee, Stolid Flycatcher, Black-crowned Palm-Tanager, Hispaniolan Oriole and Ashy-faced Owl.

Day 3 – On the schedule this morning is a boat trip through the to add some species to our list of waterbirds and shorebirds: Brown and Red-footed Booby, Black- and Yellow-Crowned Night-Heron, Laughing and Ring-billed Gull, Least, Caspian and Royal Tern, Snowy Plover, Brown Pelican, Magnificent Frigatebird and many more. After lunch, we drive back to Santo Domingo to continue our journey.

Day 4 – Early in the morning, we drive to the Botanical Garden in Santo Domingo. Targets here are Vervain Hummingbird, Broad-billed Tody, Hispaniolan Woodpecker, Hispaniolan Lizard-Cuckoo, Palmchat, Black-crowned Palm-Tanager, Hispaniolan Parakeet, and the near-threatened West-Indian Whistling Duck. From the Botanical Garden, we continue straight to our next destination, Cabo Rojo, on the southwest coast of the DR.

Day 5 – Along Alcoa road, an old mining site on the south side of the Sierra de Bahoruco, we’ll look out for Least Pauraque, Hispaniolan Emerald, Antillean Siskin, Hispaniolan Pewee, Hispaniolan Parrot, Hispaniolan Parakeet, Hispaniolan Palm Crown, Hispaniolan Crossbill and Golden Swallow. In the afternoon, we’ll be looking for ducks, flamingoes, shorebirds, warblers, flycatchers and weavers at the Cabo Rojo wetlands.

Day 6 – Prepare for a bumpy ride over steep rocky roads and through today. It is worth it though, because this is where we will look for some of the harder-to-get endemics. Primarily the Eastern Chat-Tanager, which is pretty much impossible to get anywhere else, and the main reason to even drive up this road. Other target species we can see here include Hispaniolan Parakeet, Hispaniolan Trogon, Hispaniolan Spindalis, Rufous-throated Solitaire and Narrow-billed Tody.

Day 7 – Today, we drive to the northern slope of the Sierra de Bahoruco, where we will focus on birds such as Bay-breasted Cuckoo, Greater Antillean Euphonia, Flat-billed Vireo, White-fronted Quail Dove, Broad-billed and Narrow-billed Tody, Hispanolian Piculet, Hispaniolan Oriole and Hispanolian Lizard-Cuckoo. We may also have another shot at the Ashy-faced Owl.

Day 8 – Another rough drive today, this time along Zapotén road. But, this is a must-go location, since it is one of the best spots to look for White-necked Crow, White-winged and Green-tailed Warbler, Antillean Siskin, Hispianolian Spindalis, Hispaniolan Trogon, Greater Antillean Elaenia, Western Chat-Tanager and LaSelle’s Thrush.

Day 9 – This morning we go birding along the nearby Rabo de Gato trail. An easy and pleasant walk through a beautiful forest and along a lovely stream. We’ll search for Flat-billed Vireo, White-fronted and Key-West Quail-Dove, Green-tailed Warbler, Hispaniolan Lizard-Cuckoo and more. In the afternoon, we drive back to Santo Domingo for our farewell dinner.

Day 10 – The Dominican Republic Endemics trip has come to an end. We hope you enjoyed your stay, saw plenty of beautiful birds, and have added some (endemics and others) to your life list. We will bring you back to Las Americas international airport in Santo Domingo in time for your flight.
